Done! Trick to my success was that I needed to sync my iPhone to a pc that I had never synced with before and worked like a charm. 3.1.2 is much better than the slow 4.2.1. I also kept getting the 1604 and another 3XXX error message but after doing these steps on another pc it all went smoothly. Thanks!!

Hi Ian thanks for your help to downgrade my G3 to 3.1.2(7D11). I have firmware 06.15.00. When I plug my phone in to my Mac iTunes tells me to upgrade to 4.1.2 but when I try it tells me it could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build. Can I upgrade any other way. Thanks Ian
