The Columbians is a nick of the famous Freddie Rich Orchestra. Smith Ballew, born in 1901 in Texas, was one of the first row crooners of the turn of 1920/30s. He sung for most of the leading orchestras (Leo Reisman, Ben Selvin, Sam Lanin, The Dorsey Brothers, Joe Venuti, Frankie Trumbauer, Ben Pollack) and record labels in New York. After the Great Depression he established his own dance band and since 1936 became famous also as a "singing cowboy" for 20th Century Fox B 'western' movies. The rest of the actors of this clip need not to be introduced...

That was years before "Casablanca".... so the song wasn't new when it was included in that movie. I didn't know that! This version is great, thank you for uploading it.

Love the clarinet solo and violin....HA, the piano was rather march like and crisp....then the flowing violins...what contrast....I love it!!!!!

I had the privilege to play for one of the Tommy Dorsey orchestra trumpet players two years back; Ray Michaud.

Hey skimdit, if you're playing this kind of music in the Crescent City - I'm coming to New Orleans just to visit you! I just love this - they don't make them like this anymore! This music soothes the soul.

What a lovely rendition of this song which will forever be associated with "Casablanca". The stills are nice too.

these text boxes are too small to describe it, so maybe I'll post about it on my blog, and if I do I'll give a link here.
