yes, of course! you can definitely use vanilla. ricepaper would be too yellow.

is there much difference in quality between the urban decay and mac eye shadows?

havent used either yet but fancy something different to clinique and rimmel! :)

Yes there is! There is a huge difference in Mac and Urban Decay to Clinique and Rimmel. Mac eyeshadows have a lot of color payoff and when you apply the eyeshadow onto your eyes, the color looks exactly as it does in the container. That is why people love Mac so much. Urban Decay eyeshadows glide on super smooth and are very pigmented as well. I would definitely recommend you buying at least one eyeshadow of each brand to try it out! Especially the matte colors. They are so intense!
