@MONKNER I totally agree with you - I've always been happy to share my spots when people ask as where I live in the UK, spearing is a very small sport. In 3 years I've only ever once bumped into a proper spearo - and the only reason he was there was that I'd told him the spot!
I think that if you find somewhere special, you do need to keep it to yourself - greed is one of the worst human emotions!

They are much like a Mulloway in looks, but they are super, super jumpy and skittish. Very, very hard to approach. That's why the videos I have are so unusual. They are a deep water fish and typically only come in during spring to spawn. Most people would blast a fish like this instantly, but if I've already landed a fish or two this size in the year, I just let them go and film them, waiting for a monster (70+). A really exciting fish to hunt.

nice video. Are these fish extremely rare or locally common? Here in australia we have a similar fish called mulloway. Many divers have never seen one however i've been lucky enough to see several large schools and land one of around 50lbs
It's people like you that give spearfishermen a good name!
I know a lot of people who just shoot everything with no regard for the consequences - passing on a big fish like that shows your respect for your quarry - good man.

Thanks, brother. It's always nice to hear I'm not the only one that understands it isn't O.K. just to shoot every big fish just because you can. If I did, the death toll would be unbelievable and pathetic. And all just for my selfish glory.

@MONKNER it's great that there are others who feel the same! This last weekend, a 'friend' called me up and asked if I'd share the spot where I collect mussels - the next day he posts a picture on a spearfishing forum of him with a massive pile of mussels - the greedy, selfish bastard took every last one! Far far, far more than he could possibly need. Things like that absolutely disgust me.

I'm with you all the way. It's a long, painful lesson to learn that you can't tell anyone, anything, ever. It doesn't matter how well you think you know them, it always comes back to bite you in the end. Greed and the need to be some sort of a big hero always wins out for people like that. I don't suppose your "friends" initials are D.Z. are they?

Thanks, brother, appreciate that. It does pay off big time. Once I have some fish in the freezer I just hold off for a 70+ pounder. In the meantime I film what I see while I'm hunting and waiting.
