I remember it WELL and even though I was injured later, I was forced to go to the park and didn't see my destroyed Marina block till just a few weeks ago Just was to much and I still came back and lived there for a few more years. Hard to believe it is 20yrs ago!
Man, I remember this like yesterday. I was at home alone when the quake hit. Scared the S**t out of me. I was standing in the doorway and saw the walls twist. Things fell and broke. Doors opened and slammed. Stuff fell off the ceiling. The qake stopped and I looked outside and the lightpoles were still swaying. I lived in San Francisco across from Lake Merced and people were jogging by like nothing happened. They never felt it. It was a strange night after that.
In the information at the top it say's approximately at 8:15pm it hit. It was actually at 5:04p.m. I was living in San Jose, Ca. at the time and was only 11 years old. In a couple of days from now, It will be 20 years ago. I can remember it like it was yesterday.
In one case a civilian went back into a section of freeway after the Oakland F.D. had left without properly searching for survivor's and rescued a man trapped in his car. Also it needs mentioning, a "California Dept. of Forestry" Firefighter, who had no connection with the Oak F.D what so ever. On his way to work, stopped at the Freeway Scene and with the help of Neighborhood Civilian's managed to pull a person to safety. The CDF man & Civilian's were both treated with contempt by Oakland Fire.
