  • A really bad placement ! It can lead the filter to take in more hot air than cold air, thus making it worse than the OEM filter.

  • @ChicanoRockero The idea is to take as cold air in as possible.. If you take in hot air, it makes the setup worse than the original setup..

Hot air is less dense than cold air ! Thus making the explosions smaller !

And the reason that the filter takes more hot air in when sitting like that, is that its closer to the hot engine, which creates alot of warm air..

Leading the filter down to the original filter, would be alot better !

  • needs a heat shield

  • ram air like this only works better on turbo engines... coz forced induction sucks so much air it doesn't matter if it's hot or cold... on your setup, i would say you lost power, it might feel faster coz it sounds louder lol

  • If you're doing this you need to install a heat shield too... I built one out of aluminum and it fits perfectly, makes a HUGE difference.

  • But it have less surface area and hence suck less air than OEM. Come on guys, are you saying you better than most auto engineer.

If you put aftermarket in..you better change your oil every week or every 1K miles. Lol.

Your engine bay thermal area are pretty much the same except for the radiator area..unless you have a ventible hood.

  • did you guys notice the little tube to the left(thats open) and leads to the front of the car....ya that bring in air from in front of the car.

  • @Kregme Agreed, that setup has simply deprived his engine of power - slowed his car down. He needs a proper heat shield for a cold air intake. Signature Motoring heat shields for the E46 run only about $130 and are the very best in the world - gauranteed.

  • check out my injen intake. the sound is a lot different

  • @36trooper

That is understandable.. I tried swapping my filter in my 528, but i couldnt hear anything different.. So i swapped it back to the OEM, and bought a flat performance filter from HKS..

  • @ChicanoRockero Cold air is denser and therefor carries more oxygen.

This is really only for the sound though. That 4-5 hp you gain is in the 5-6krpm, and how often do you go 100+ mph? I have a 328I and for city driving I'm in the 2-3krpm. There is actually a HP loss in that range. It's cool but I'll be sticking with the OEM.
