American Pie (Spelling Bee Edition)

Song written to parallel to a passage in Vergil's Aeneid relating to enduring difficult times in one's life. The lighting, audio, performance, songwriting and cinematography were attained by means of the most improvised and unprofessional methods possible.

Lyrics:
A long, long time ago, I can still remember
qualifying for the spelling bee, And I knew if I had my chance
that I could compete and advance and maybe I could earn a victory.
But the semi-finals were a big "if," I spelled "rhythm" wrong and took home fifth,
I still competed for the county, but I didn't earn my bounty.
I can't remember if I cried but in my loss I take no pride
but something touched me deep inside the day I lost that bee.

So why, why, in the spelling bee, could I not correctly spell K-I-N-E-T-I-C?
I tried my best but I wasn't lucky,
Spellin' in the spelling bee, spellin' in the spelling bee.

Was there anything you ever lost? Your chances out the window tossed?
It happened to me in that bee. Now I could not stand up that day
And in front of everyone display ultimate spelling skills.
Well, I know I could have studied hard, practiced, practiced and gone real far
I stepped up to the microphone, Man, I was in the zone
I was a fifth-grade spelling phenomenon but I couldn't tell what was going on
But I knew all my luck was gone in that spelling bee.

So why, why, in the spelling bee, could I not correctly spell K-I-N-E-T-I-C?
I tried my best but I wasn't lucky,
Spellin' in the spelling bee, spellin' in the spelling bee.
Now for six years I've been pondering the results of that stupid thing
'Cause that's not how it should have been. When the geeky kids spelled all their words
and the dumb kids had to sit down first, I didn't know where I fit;
Oh, and as I got up in front of the crowd, in my mind I had a doubt,
my feeling was assured, I got a damn hard word.
And while other kids got "Australia" and other words that were no duh,
I had to spell "kinetic" and lost the spelling bee.

So why, why, in the spelling bee, could I not correctly spell K-I-N-E-T-I-C?
I tried my best but I wasn't lucky,
Spellin' in the spelling bee, spellin' in the spelling bee.

Mrs. Bailey, my fifth grade teacher, had shown up to view the feature
And watch her students spell. She saw me enter my own hell
while others won and cheered and yelled but I couldn't succeed that day.
Now the audience was in a hush, I was nervous and in a rush
I spelled my word wrong, but I have moved along,
'Cause I learned an important thing and now about it I can sing.

I met my match in a spelling bee in the form of anxiety
But I have learned how to cope. Staying calm and keeping cool
will save you from looking like a fool so always keep your head in the game.
And on the way home my parents consoled, I did fine, that's what I was told;
even though I failed the test I gave it all my very best.
And the qualities I admire most I learned from when I was toast
'Cause I learned more than how to spell in the spelling bee.
