Affirmative Action may get someone into an undergraduate school, if they are academically qualified. After that for graduate school, a person makes it on their own merit. Or they don't make it. In addition, the US Dept of Labor found that white women are the primary beneficiaries of Affirmative Action.

In context, Obama was making light of the republican party's strategy of putting an articulate, attractive experienced woman on the ticket as putting lipstick on a pig. As if to say that Gov. Palin is just a pretty face. It was a sexist comment, with sexist tones, and recieved by the audience as a sexist remark. Bravo!
