This video is a great example of dealing with an extremely aggressive opponent. In this case I am competing against Jason Moir of Goju-Ryu.

As the opponent 'stream rolls' in move out of distance to render their attacks useless, then hangeki (counterattack). This must be done just at the right moment to snatch an ippon and defeat them. Too early is dangerous, and too late allows them to continue attacking. In self defence exchange seiken for a nukite to the eyes then follow up with a kick to the groin or solar plexus. The principle remains the same, evade strike, and escape.

This technique requires that you properly utilize ma'ai and timing. Good ma'ai is best defined as "the optimal distancing for yourself and the worst for one's opponent".

  • You had long hair??

  • Yes, for a year and a half I had long hair... I even tried skinhead in the 90's. All good fun! During that time, as an experiment I also stacked on the weight by eating heaps of bulk up products and going hard out at the gym... Dead lifts, squats you name it. I got up to 89kg then decided that I was still a little guy haha. So I dropped back to 70kgs, and returned to back to being clean cut...

My wife cracks up at my long hair karate vids LOL...
