Working in the video game industry is one thing every gamer dreams of doing. According to GameCareerGuide.com, more than 50,000 people in North America alone play, create and design video games for a living. Many gamers would jump at the chance to be paid to play video games, but most don't know the first thing to do when it comes to getting their foot in the door. In this episode of The Reboot, host Rio Pesino speaks with video game recruiters from Bungie, LucasArts, BioWare, Ubisoft, THQ and FullSail about the hiring process, what they look for in a candidate and some insiders' advice on how to break into the industry.

  • Industry always makes it seem like they have all the keys

but when it comes to games that's not he case.

The industry is very myopic so my game will be great!

  • @wolfengheist Heh, there's no need to tell me, I'm already in the industry. :) The game design courses are like those QA ones I see - they're wholly unnecessary.

  • Right and most of these colleges that offer up "game design" degrees are scams. Beware of that too.

  • @wolfengheist You're mostly right - a degree can simply be a means to learn 3DS Max and art apps. Obviously it's an indication and what it all comes down to is talent, which is best demonstrated in a portfolio or a mod or something.

  • That may be true in some cases but in most cases they look at your portfolio first degree second. At least that's my experience.

  • @wolfengheist Gaming industries don't look at degrees to see that you have spent money and went had specific "training" in your course. They look at your degree to see that you have commited yourself to a certain goal, and that you have finished your goal. It's so easy starting up an idea with a game, and when you're half-way through, you may have a new project in your mind. Gaming industries always look at completing a project all the way through, instead of stopping mid-way.

  • that first step is soo hard get in...

  • You need a college degree in what?

  • @wolfengheist u took the words right out of my mouth

  • @wolfengheist also there is unity, a very powerful game engine...
