Irony of ironies - in a film that is all about dubbing actors, Debbie Reynolds herself was dubbed by Betty Noyes in this scene where she sings for Jean Hagen. I've restored Debbie's original vocal track.

Here's a trivia question: who dubbed Debbie Reynolds' voice when she was seen dubbing Jean Hagen's onscreen speaking voice in the film?

From Hugh Fordin's "The World of Entertainment!":

In several scenes Debbie Reynolds is lip-synching and rerecording Jean Hagen's speaking voice. "We used Jean Hagen dubbing Debbie dubbing Jean," director Stanley Donen explains. "Jean's voice is quite remarkable, and it was supposed to be cultured speech - and Debbie had that terrible western noise."

  • they only dubbed Debbie for this song in the movie, i think it is because it was a hard song for her to sing, very much out of her range as Debbie herself put it, i think it is stupid, because the rest of the songs were her own voice, MGM was really dumb

  • @joeyjosephs

Perhaps it was because Debbie's voice didn't fit with Jean Hagen's image.

Betty also dubbed Debbie for "You Are My Lucky Star" at the end.

  • I much prefer Debbie actually. There's not that much of a difference between the voices, but Debbie's is definitely softer and a sweeter.

  • Wow, this is ironic. Dubbing in an actress playing a character dubbing an actress?

her voice was really good :(

I prefer Debbie's voice 984753984759387539875398753987539875938753 times more than Betty Noyes'.

I like Debbie's voice but she's definitely not an alto...her voice isn't as smooth and velvety as the dubbed voice used in the film.

  • I've made a comment on having Debbie's voice dubbed in this movie somewhere else because I was astonished that they didn't use her own voice (there sure was nothing wrong with it!). I heard her in 'Tammy' song and in 'Hit the deck' and she could sing! So what was the reason??????

    catwomanpl1

@catwomanpl1 I think they felt Debbie's voice didn't match Lena Lamont's onscreen presence.

  • Again, BIG MISTAKE in not using Reynolds own voice. It rings truer.

Maybe they were going for irony lol

I didn't know this... i always assumed it was Debbie's voice. Well... i totally agree with you. Debbie's voice is great and sweet. The other voice, that came out with the movie, was more lyrical. But Debbie's not. Is more a sweet voice that just fits. Like Gene Kelly's voice... he could sing but he's not lyrical.

  • Betty Noyes sings with more power of expression, Debbie Reynolds is more ''delicate'' with regard to musical performances ... Thanks for posting the video with original music in the voice of Debbie, I love the voice of two...

  • I currently have the entire film "Singin' in the Rain" up on YT. Warner Brothers has now blocked almost every scene worldwide. For awhile they were allowing most of the scenes with ads, which is fine with me, but no more. I think you got this scene up on YT without it being blocked because YT's software was able to detect that the audio was not from Singin' in the Rain. Good for you... That's one for our side. :-)

  • I prefer Debbie's actual voice, it makes me want to fall in love with her a lot more than Betty's...

Why did they dub her? She sounds fantastic. I <3 Debbie.

i still don't get why they dubbed Debbie since Debbie's singing voice is/was fine
