Simple. Corolla is DOHC and Civic is SOHC. Honda always tries to work on weight to torque ratio so they make SOHC engines because they are lighter But they have to compromise on Spark Plugs position. Whereas Corolla is DOHC and the Spark plugs are well placed at the center for maximum combution and the valve train has better control 4 valves / cylinder .The input and exhaust is conrolled by independent cams .Hence better power .

They're both horrible, but if I had to give up my 2008 Porsche Cayenne S, my 2007 Cadillac Escalade, and my 2006 Lexus GX470 for one or the other, I would have to go with the Toyota.
