Rollins College, SPARC (Service Philanthropy Activism Rollins College) is the only one of its kind in the state of Florida that includes a community service component in orientation which is continued in multiple service-learning projects, immersions and reflections throughout the semester in students first-year experience courses---The Rollins College Conference (RCC).
SPARC was an awesome experience, said Maia Ryan, a Rollins freshman who participated in a landscaping project at Fern Creek Elementary School. I moved here less than a week ago, and I am already getting to know the community around me. It is definitely a great feeling.
Through SPARC the Rollins community participated in 2,600 hours of community involvement. The work the students did in one afternoon has put us weeks ahead of where we were and will have an impact on the organization for months to come, said Shannon Lacek, director of marketing & development for the Enzian Theater/Florida Film Festival. We love our continued relationship with Rollins, said Holly Vanture, community and mentor coordinator at Fern Creek Elementary. For our kids, interacting with college students lets them know that one day, they could go to college.
SPARC is a new initiative and the cornerstone of orientation for new students. The goal of the program is to ignite students' interest and passion for engaging as servant leaders and to introduce them to the engaged campus.
