Ugh, about 90% of the matches I've had today were Final Destination. This is what I got sifting through about 1 hour and 20 minutes of online Smashing. Does anybody else have it this bad?

(Also, it seems that I had inadvertently missed Gurren Lagann on the Sci-Fi Channel when playing this, as my Sci-Fi Channel is 3 hours ahead. Oh well. I guess I'll pick it up on DVD, since it looks great, the Sci-Fi Channel version is oddly edited for time, and I can't watch the Sci-Fi Channel from university.)

Match #5
Ike
Corneria
9:16 PM Pacific Time
Here's a REAL taunt party--it doesn't suddenly shift in tone or result in some double-cross anywhere. It looks like I effectively added the sidestep into the taunt parties. Ike sure looks strange repeatedly sidestepping (but not quite as strange as some other characters, like Kirby or Squirtle). Also, if you turn the sound off at 1:21 to 1:31, it looks like Ike and Captain Falcon are singing a duet.

Match #6
Kirby
WarioWare, Inc.
9:40 PM
Well! It seems that I WASN'T put with three Final Destinationers after all. After about 6 stages on Final Destination, I was given this treat by someone who apparently dislikes Final Destination as much as I do. The Final Destinationers, whoever they were, couldn't keep up with WarioWare's dynamic environment and its reward to people who understand the stage. It looks like Sonic managed to dodge a Cook Kirby Final Smash by sidestepping, it seems. Still, this was such a huge change from the previous match, where the FD-ing Sonic got 8 KOs!

Match #7
Donkey Kong
Frigate Orpheon
10:18 PM
This wasn't a request, actually. I chose this stage because I myself had realized I haven't seen this stage in a long long time. I was caught in the worst spot when the stage flipped around; I would've been in a Sudden Death against Ike otherwise. (On a related note, Hang Castle from Sonic Heroes would've also been a great idea for a stage. It's a haunted gothic castle that occasionally flips upside-down, completely changing your path to get to the next portion.)

Match #8
Wario
Mushroomy Kingdom (above ground)
10:24 PM
This is another stage I haven't played in ages, and as you can see, poor Ike is caught in a scrolling stage, his biggest weakness online. It's also happening to play my favorite song in the above-ground side of the stage, "Ground Theme 2," an early-2000s style reggae remix of the now-famous Super Mario Bros. main theme. Unlike in Rumble Falls of the previous video, I was doing well as Wario this time. I guess it's because while he can't get very far off the ground (short of the Wario Waft), he has incredible horizontal speed for a heavyweight, both along the ground and in the air.

  • @Andriodacg17 Yeah, what you say is true too. (I'd still say Battlefield is the fairest of the stages, though it's impossible for a stage to be compeltely fair.) I can't get enough of that chaos though.

  • @Overhazard I see your point Overhazard. FD can be an uphill battle for some characters against others, but the same can be said on pretty much any stage. Just because a stage is or isn't flat is not going to stop a Pit or Link from spamming arrows or a Fox or Falco from shoot their lasers. The platforms do make a difference yes, but my initial quarrel was that just because FD lacks any gimmicks, that in its self does not make it a unfair stage. If anything its a break from the chaos of others.

  • @Andriodacg17 If we're splitting hairs, it CAN be unfair for other reasons. I've noticed Final Destination has quite a bias against characters with projectiles like Snake and Link. Characters like Donkey Kong and Sonic get the disadvantage because in order to reach far-away characters with projectiles, they have to dodge them; whereas with platforms, characters with projectiles actually need to move around. The game was designed with Battlefield in mind, not Final Destination.

  • @Overhazard Oh no I got his point. It's one thing to say a stage is boring and flat. That's understandable, it would get tiresome if you had to play a stage multiple times in a row. I'm not a huge fan of FD either. But it's completely different to say FD isn't fair because it has no gimmicks. Gimmicks aren't fair. They are unpredictable events designed to distract and entertain the players. Yes, that is what the element of fun is. A stage cant be called unfair because it has no gimmicks.

  • @Andriodacg17 You completely missed the point--he said that the gimmicks are there so that the same person doesn't always win all of the matches and because he finds it more interesting than the plain dull stages.

  • @Sparkz1607 Wow that's the worst argument I've ever read. So what you're saying is that gimmicks are fair over a plain "boring" stages such as FD because the "best players won't always win". Are you serious? According to you the only way a bad player can beat someone good is if gimmicks and luck are involved. How is anything that involves luck a fair fight? FD is fair because it relies souly on skill in order to win. Apparently skill doesn't make you a fair fighter.

  • @Sparkz1607 I agree with you that it's no fun when one person always wins. And yes, I do feel that competitive gaming gets pretty dull.

However, I've studied competitive people for some time, and their drive to prove themselves better than the current "best player" is so strong as to keep them playing against their preconceived rivals. To them, they want to topple the champion and take his or her place, hence they play with as few things to get in the way as possible.

  • @Sparkz1607 If one player always wins, everyone else always loses. That isn't fun. That's why all the stages have some sort of gimmick, whether it be varying terrain height, lazers, falling rocks, or random objects that do a bunch of damage. It's to mix up the gameplay.

All the best games, even FPS games, have some sort of element of luck to them. Team Fortress 2 has critical hits. There's an example for you.

The point is, all skill and no luck makes gamers dull people. It just. isn't. fun.

  • @Sparkz1607 Heh, I find it interesting that you stand in direct contrast to the competitive players, nearly all of whom will want to see the best player always win. What keeps it interesting for them is that they all want to be that "best player."

Final Destination is an unfair stage even under their own terms, actually, because without any platforms, it heavily favors characters with long-range projectiles like Fox and Toon Link. Characters like Donkey Kong are disadvantaged there.

  • Final destination seriously sucks. It's flat, boring, and flat. And boring. And FLAT.

Some morons say it's a "Fair fight", but on the contrary, it is NOT fair. It has no gimmicks. Gimmicks are there so the best player doesn't always win, gimmicks are there to mix up the gameplay, gimmicks are there to ADD AN ELEMENT OF LUCK.

Did I say they were there so the best player doesn't always win? Wouldn't it be boring for everyone else if the best player always won? Yeah, it would be. :/
