This storyboard video was the first planned ending for TLK. Scar wins, but gets engulfed in flames.

So not to kill the whole pride they came to another version and killed only one lion. Still I don't like the idea. Might they use the exile =(

I kinda like the real ending better, but i like the hamlet quote and scar manipulating Simba's good nature in order to throw him off pride rock. oh, and the laugh is badass too :D

@TheArtsyWolf Simba was thrown into the flames, but managed to escape. (1:17)However, Scar thought he won, and keeps laughing, but he doesn't notice that the flames were slowly burning him alive, so eventually, Scar died. At the end, you see Simba alive, and the lioness is probably Nala or his mother Sarabi.

Well. I think that would have been rather scarring.

I can see why they went against this ending: because it not only makes Simba antihero-ish, but also was really nightmarish in Scar's death and was not that dramatic for Scar's realization of who REALLY killed Mufasa.

.....I think it's more fitting that he got killed by his own followers after he abandoned them for his own (ironic) safety. :p Still, I like the idea.

the reason they chose the film ending was becasue it shows simba earning the right to become king and avenging mufasa, also to have the hyenas, scars own troops turn on him becasue they realized he was only manipulating them, shows an ironic death, that the villain brought on himself, that his hate and jealousy lead him to this fate, makes his death all the sweeter, this here shows Scars insanity but it would not have made the lion king what it is today.
