@Shaddaz1 Used those pnumatic hammers, but they aren't much better because of the weight, noise and vibration..........thank the lord for Plasser & Thuerer in the long run !
@colliecandle shovel packing nasty job I use to like the little jackhammers with the swan neck for that job heavy as well when you got 10 switches todo but so much nicer than a shovel lol
@Shaddaz1 Yes, very backbreaking indeed ! The thing that did me in though was the packing afterwards...beating that ballast under the sleepers with a shovel gave me some diabolical headaches as it jars the head and neck something rotten!
@colliecandle Back braking looks like the formation of a wetbed so maybe 8-10 sleeper dig out new sleepers maybe if they have broken backs good day maybe 2 hard graft
Im afraid the track is not good, in the US it maybe is but with 22 years experience on the railways in the uk I have seen many bad dips and joints and wet-spots in the ballast that make the track sink like that, however the track is supposed to move under the load of the train to absorb it but to a lesser degree to that.
I dont see a problem ;)

this problem is easy and cheap enough to remedy - a few men, a couple of rail jacks and plenty of clean ballast plus a few picks and shovels!

Relatively quiet, though.
