Marilyn Nonken playing the big toy piano/piano excerpt from David Rakowski's Piano Concerto (the toy piano she is using was manufactured by Schoenhut, Model 6637MB and purchased from All About Pianos). N.B. in performance, the orchestra plays while this music happens.

The premiere took place with Boston Modern Orchestra Project, conducted by Gil Rose, 11/2/07. The concerto -- all 35 minutes of it -- is available on BMOP/Sound, catalog number 1009. This excerpt begins at 7:07 on track 6 of the CD.

Filmed on a Flip Video in Marilyn's office on Sept. 29, 2007. And NYC traffic and a jazz ensemble rehearsal downstairs are evident in the audio.

  • Wow, this is so much fun! It's like Mr. Rogers' Trolley on cocaine! Annnyways, I've been looking into getting a schoenhut, how much do they cost?

  • Depends on the model. This is the 6637. Look it up at allaboutpianos.ocm.

  • so nice !

  • very smart.

  • nice! I have the recording of Nonken playing this with the BMOP

  • I do not believe one needs especially thing fingers to play a Schoenhut toy piano. They claim the keys are the same width as an adult piano, although I measured mine and they are slightly narrower. 37 notes on a regular Yamaha P-85 digital piano are 20 3/8 inches and on my Schoenhut 379M they are 19 1/2 inches. The bigger difference is that on an adult piano are about 6 1/2 inches long and on my 379M they are about 3 1/2 inches long, so it gets a little crowded sometimes.

  • THIN FINGERS!! ohh he just went there

  • thin fingers help a bit. I'm trying to play some tom waits on mine. from One From The Heart....

  • You are incredible. I play a toy piano myself and you're a huge inspiration. Thanks!
