Sleepy Hollow coincidentally was made the setting of the story because of its proximity to the battlefields of the Saratoga campaign and in and around the real sleepy hollow are buried many hessian soldiers and some reported to have been without heads.

i have done research looking for evidence that the story is based on real events and sure enough it is. The horseman is based on the Hessian Colonel count karl emillius von Donop who was an aristocratic landgraff of hesse-kassel who died at freeman's farm during the battle of Saratoga. I do believe that Washington irving based his story on this real figure. Like what Baltus Van tassel says Von Donop also came to the war not for money but for vain pursuit of glory and love of battle.

man this is one of my favorite movies of all time. I watch it every year around halloween. i don't find it scary any more but memorizing. ever since I was a kid I was enthralled by the story of sleepy hollow but I love this version because it makes a very gritty version to the tale where the horseman is an actual ghost. I also am a huge history buff of the american revolution period and love the story even more because of that.
