  • how many HP a lathe motor like that has? they say it has immense power but they it's not specified anywhere.

  • Wow, this brings back memories when I used to operate a lathe just like this. I did more Chevy 350 cranks than all other's combined (Very soft metal). I had jeep cranks only 2yrs old Coming in (low oil presure). I was shown how to save cranks that were damage at '40 thou under by off setting the chucks to machine more the good side.

  • @1987Gnx1 how does one greet a video?

  • i got my motor in a shop right now and thats what they are doing to it. it is interesting to see how it done. greet video man.

  • @dondebest

i work in a machine shop. we never touch anything that goes on a car. i prefer cnc and manual lathe FAR more than running a grinder.

  • @therealgergory I'm not in the States, I'm Dutch. Grinding and knife-edging a crankshaft has a lot of upsides, first off all offcourse the weight. Be careful though not to grind off too much as the engine needs to be able to continue it's momentum (if there is too little weight to keep the centrifical force going, the engine will seize up.), Also the knife edging and balancing will improve the throttle response and overall feel of the engine.

  • @dondebest lol! What a joy!! Are you in the states? Is weight reduction the only reason that you'd grind a crank on your side cause I've heard over there if the motor goes just buy a new one?

  • @therealgergory Hahaha I'm afraid not. I'm still busy getting every last little bit of mass off of my engine. Even though I'm out of the machining and car maintenance business.

  • @dondebest Is there life after being an automotive machinist?? I go to bed dreaming of crankshafts turning!!

  • God, this reminds me of 5 years of automotive engineering:P
