  • What kind of Upright is Marc playing? It seems to be a less deep body... He sounds wonderful!

  • Hi Jasonc., For the guitar of Abercrombie I can tell you that it is a Brian Moore custom, inconfondible, for the doublebass I don't know the luthier has built it, yes, it was a double bass with a less deep body, good sound, never deep as a real double bass, but, as the guitar semihollow, a good sound, after he's also Marc Johnson.

  • Marc is actually playing an Eminence Portable Upright Bass. Check out the website of G. Edward Lutherie, maker of the Eminence, and the Eminence Bass Mega Thread at the bass forum TalkBass, in the Electric Upright Bass section.

  • Currently I am an IT Tech and my son is all grown up and in his twenties and doing God knows what with his life. hehehe.....I havent seen John perform since the nineties. I fell off the map for awhile and the miracle of cyberspace is reconnecting me with about a thousand players who were a part of my musical journey. Cheers everyone who endured my god awful ramble!

  • Come see the John Abercrombie Quartet at the Angel City Jazz Festival at the Musician's Institute Theater on 10/9!

  • Nice sound, especially the bass................

  • I think thats an Eminence upright portable bass made by Christopher basses China.

  • Well, John has been my idea of a good American and a mentor and a secret idol of mine ever since "Gateway". He was the reason I took the guitar as serious as I did and dropped out of school to listen to Miles Davis and practice 8 hours a day and work a sidejob working for India Street Percussion. Thanks John for helping me have the balls to face a tough life as a teenage dad in the eighties, when the thing was unheard of and you faced ostracization from friends and family. Hence the term mentor.

  • There's a group in San Diego-- The Hutchins Consort-- the only group in the world that plays a full set of her instruments-- and they have a couple of albums out. I think you can get 'em on amazon, or through their website. I've heard them live several times, and it is astounding. like nothing you've ever heard!!!

  • Wow--I just did a google search and what I found looked amazing! I play guitar, but have always loved the sound of upright, so to see Marc playing this very unique looking bass with such a rich sound interested me. But Carleen's violins are totally off the wall! I would love to hear what they sound like. Thanks a lot!

  • It looks to me like a Carleen Hutchins bass-- it is actually a violin, it just plays in the bass register. Check out Carleen's work, she's a master luthier, and her instruments sound amazing!!
