  • His dance was interpretative and natural, not classical... which I've always liked. But, my Ma (born 1914, came to U.S. 1934), danced in Pandit Uday Shankar's style. So I am biased.

  • @PurnaRodman Namaste. Do you have any footage? Nick

  • In retrospect, and in comparison with the dynamic dancers and choreographers of today, Uday Shankars group comes accross as very boring. Heavy on the ritualistic elements, very repetative, very poor on abhinaya and taal. Uday was lucky that in his time Europe had no idea about authentic Indian dance and he was able to capitolize on that fact.

  • Toa certain point I agree but you use the words 'In retropect' & 'in comparison'. Can we fairly compare then & now? Your last comment is very true, I fear but at least he did help to introduce Indian performing arts to the world & help his youngest brother, who always travelled with the dance group around Europe & the States, Pt Ravi Shankar to learn English & French & how to, initially, present an alien art form to the west.

Ram Gopal was far more 'authentic' but even HE was innovative.

  • There's a small clip of him with Simkie on Ravi Shankar's excellent 2 DVD set called 'Ravi Shankar In Portrait'. You can still get this on Amazon or Ebay.

    What an irritating comment.

Is this the way you look upon history?

Art will always improve but without Pt Uday Shankar (or pioneers like him) you and I are probably commenting upon some stupid politics or trash entertainment.

  • @rannajim : But of course ultimately all boils down to a matter of opinion - some could find traditional kathak, say, unbearably repetitive, boring and "poor on tala" compared to Bollywood film dances. I suspect the majority of film goers fall in that category!

  • @rannajim : presumably this is not the "authentic Indian dance" that "dynamic dancers and choreographers of today" are performing in Europe? And "authentic Indian dance" is light on "ritualistic elements", and not "repetative" (sic)?

Uday Shankar created something new. Instead of treading rigid age-old grooves of classical dance forms, he broke boundaries to choreograph his pieces using some "mix & match"; and was probably the first to do so.

  • these pieces are "ASTRA PUJA"and "MACHINE DANCE"

  • excellent ritualistic or not
