I think we forget in the mobile/Skype generation how things have changed. I saw Mary introduce this at a gig once and she described it as "a time when emigration meant you would never hear that person's voice again" - you might write an airmail letter but you couldn't just call up the pesron you left behind. I remember living abroad in the 1980s was hard enough - I can't imagine how hard it was in the early 1900s...

We saw Mary in Eindhoven some years ago and had a private audience with her after the show. She had just sung at the funeral of a friends son the day before and she had a lot of emotion in her voice that night. She was so gracious standing for pictures. One of which can be seen on the wall of an Irish Pub called the Banner in Rockland Massachusetts where I was head of the local govenment at the time. She is even more beautiful in person.

Everyone takes their roll in the barrel and have throughout history. The Irish were no exception, we perpetuate the pains and wrongs of the past for political gain in many cases. Some people know how to move on like the Irish. Others have less dignity.
I love the live version of this which was done on the Mary Black Live DVD/CD. and it has a really extended instrumental section which is sooo good. You should check it out. Thanks for posting =)
