1982年にZ400FXの後継機種として発売された。発売1年前の1981年にホンダから発売されたCBX400Fなどのライバル車種に対抗するためにエンジンや足まわ­りなどが全面的に改良された。ヘッドライトは角型に変更され、メーターもマイコン制御の液晶モニターが装備された。エンジンは手加工ポートなどで5馬力アップされ48馬力­にパワーアップされ、リヤサスペンションはオンロードバイクでは初めてユニトラック式が採用された。また重量がZ400FXより5キロ軽くなった。
