This was very interesting. I have a request: can you differentiate, in your rules for hijab, the ones that appear in the Qur'an and the ones that are in sunnah? Thank you!

The Qur'an gives the outline and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) explained, and Muslim women at that time practiced it, so no Faraz and Sunna in this case (just some difference of opinion among scholars).

as a western female revert to islam, i thank Allah for the hijab. It is much needed in such a corrupt society where a lot of men ogle women, and treat them as objects of desire..we are much more than that! alhamdulillah.

ummkoko: Of course you mention bikinis. Every Muslim I've talked to on this issue always poses the same dichotomy: full hijab OR bikini/Christina Aguilera. No middle ground, no t-shirt and cargo pants. It is a false dichotomy, because it doesn't apply to the vast majority of the female population of the planet Earth. I don't have the exact statistics on this, but I feel comfortable in guessing that a good 75%, maybe more, are neither in hijab or a bikini.

In chapter 5 verse 6 how to prepar for prayer..

"O you who believe! when you prepare for prayer, wash your faces and your handsand arms to the elbows; rub your heads with wter and wash yourfeet to the ankles".. there for the Qur'an makes it very clear what you are supposed to be covering.....

Good posting. I think according to criteria 6 there should not be any clothing which is symbolic to infidelity. I worked for sometime in Iran as physician there men can wear pants and shirts but tie is not allowed because it is symbol of infedality
