@SuperZombieDonut You got that wrong, flood did not attack first the humans and neither the Prophets, that would be like attacking the whole Covenant, and that ... is... not... exactly right

@TheLegendofnoah the halo rings were not for the flood they were to kill all the floods food which was anything living, the initial attack by the flood was on the humans and prophets (before the first halo firing), read the books from the forerunner saga cryptum and primordium

@dremmeng the flood were originally a cloud of powder that the prophets and forerunner used on certain types of species to make them stronger and better but they failed and so the powder infected one of the species

@RTcaboose117 The halo rings were made for the flood, it was to erase all life from the galaxy in order to keep the flood from getting any more food. But not before the forerunners took about 100 of each species. The forerunners constructed robots to wait till the flood was wiped out before they took the organisms back to their home world. Most of the forerunners died during the initial fight with the flood, and tons more died when they activated the halos.
