Someone please help! Can you use a lav microphone of any kind with a Flip Ultra HD?!
-
@whitebub Actually it does make a big difference in sound quality regardless of whether or not the mic is omni-directional. Yes it picks up the sound because its omni, but If you point the mic down you will notice the sound is muffled/more lower end, likewise if you place the mic on the left or right collar - whereas if you place the mic at the breast bone and face up it is as clear as you'll get it.

funny how your vid has overmodulated audio

mmm. well most lapel mic's are omni directional so if it does face down its not going to mater too much.. ahhr.. and note all (i've yet to use 1 that tells me otherwise) lapel mic's need a fair bit of "tweaking" in post.. eq is not your enemy ! (turn the video up loud and listen to the start you'll heard what im talking about, this is the first video from you guys i've had a problem with (although this is the first sound video) so keep the vids comming ! loving them (most of the time)

Maybe you could get your subject to wear a shaggy coat. ;-)

I actually saw one in the B&H catalog called a Fuzzy Windjammer made for a lav mic by Rycote. They cost about $25.

Thanks for the tips. I get great use from a $15 wireless lav mic that I bought on ebay. I plan on buying a second one and using them with a field mixer.

good tips. Some cameras, like the Xacti 1000 have a wind noise reduction setting which might also help. I've heard that those furry mic covers work better than the foam ones, but what's your experience?

Generally, fur covers work better than foam. They block the wind more efficiently and muffle the sound less. We've never seen one small enough for a lav mic. That may be because they aren't as effective at the size or it may be an aesthetic issue (or both). Cheers.
