PSAC National Executive Vice President Patty Ducharme speaks to union members conducting a candle light vigil at the Winnipeg office of Conservative MP Shelly Glover to protest the planned abolition of Canada's long-gun registry and to mark the 20th anniversary of the murder of 14 women at the École Polytechnique in Montreal.
The December 6, 1989 massacre prompted the creation of a federal gun registry. Since then, police and law enforcement officers across the country access the registry literally thousands of times a day to check households for the presence of firearms before they put themselves at risk.
Since gun owners have been required to register long guns, spousal deaths by guns have dropped by 50%.
Twenty years later, a majority of Members of Parliament seem to have forgotten the lesson of the Montreal massacre. They have voted in favour of Bill C-391, a Conservative MPs bill that will eliminate the federal gun registry of rifles and shotguns and destroy the more than eight million records in the registry.

No offense maam, but the murder of women has been falling long before the long gun registry ever existed. Did you bother to check? In fact, in 2002, when the long gun registry became law the gun murder rate stopped dropping and went up slightly. Check stats canada yourself if you don't believe me.
How does lying a piece of paper beside a gun stop a mad man?
Last time I bought a gun the registration came a month later in the mail.
How does this stop a mad man?

Direct and measurable? There has never been any direct and measurable positive consequences of the long gun registry. If you are speaking of the drop in homicide rates, America saw an even greater drop and has been getting rid of gun control. Lets compare registering a gun to a car. You do not have to register a car when you buy it, you don't need a license. You can use an unregistered, unlicensed car any time you want as long as it isn't on public roads.I think you should use another comparison
