At the age of 15 I could not afford to buy any test equipment other than a Multimeter so all my test gear was home made.

I first started repairing CB radios in 1981 at the age of 15.
Electronics was self taught as here in England it was not a subject we learned at my school.
By the age of 15 I had all the channel switching mapped out on paper. It was all done in binary on most rigs.
I used to turn down the voltage on my power supply from 13.8 volt to around 8 volts to test the VCO. If the 'rig' had any problems with the VCO they would soon show up below an input voltage of 8 volts.

I have the TRC-48. there are lots of differences in the way the layout is inside... everything on the 48 is on the opposite side of the board... upside down for some reason. I have a somewhat similar problem on channels 17-20 I think that something on the board itself (not a wire) is bad...
Also, I couldn't notice if it was or not, but was your 448 in this video an all crystal radio? because my 48 has 16 crystals and a huge filter / switch... it also has a dial display and not a digital...
