Another win for Russia in the 2013 IIHF World Championship, by defeating 4-1 Germany in Day 3 of the Preliminary Round. New Jersey Devils' forward Ilya Kovalchuk scored two goals in the second period giving the 2-0 lead to his team, but in the third Russia suffered the attacks of Germany, who scored early in the period with John Tripp. But the german comeback fell short, when with less then two minutes left in the game Ilya Kovalchuk scored his third goal in the game, for a great hat-trick.
