To mark the 900th anniversary of the founding of the Alien Benedictine Priory in Ware, Hertfordshire. In June 1978 a service of thanksgiving was held in St. Mary's church attended by two archbishops, four bishops and Benedictine monks from the Roman Catholic and Anglican traditions, as well as numerous clergy and friends.

Robert Runcie (Bishop of St.Albans, who became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1980 presided), Bishop Robert was accompanied by a Russian Orthodox Archbishop - Archbishop Piterim from Moscow.

  • Thanks for posting this. I remember being there, aged 20.

There are some faces I recognise in the procession, (in addition to the obvious ones credited): Fr McGonagle (the Catholic Parish Priest), Mr Stephen Waters (who taught me French and sang in the Parish Church Choir), Alex Surridge the hairdresser . . .

  • @Nozza999 I was there aged 9 in the Choir!. The footage itself was shot on a cine-camera, and is as far as i know the only film of the event.
