Two more compost bins constructed on circular bases and concrete "lids" placed on each.Video shows important drainage channels. You will need a short spirit level to get the gradient correct. My first model built in the early 1990s used plastic drainage tube as a spout. On these three I`m using sections of 2 inch box steel. I`ve painted all 3 with bitumen paint to stop them going rusty and to attract the suns rays. It is the heat that gets so intense inside the bins that quickly rots down this summers grass clippings into next springs compost. It is not a wormery.Any worms introduced in the summer will quickly die in the heat. When the concrete is dry I will paint that with bitumen paint.I put waterproofer in the concrete as well because I want the effluent to collect in my bucket so I can pour it back in at the top. This black liquid will kill everything in a water course or garden pond so position the bins well away from such features.(Also well away from your abode because the bins smell & attract flies!) Also poured neat on your plants will result in death.A few drops (50ml per 10 litres) however in your watering can filled with plain water is an ideal feed for your tomatoes in the greenhouse.

  • The system works really well for creating huge quantities of liquid fertiliser but the height of the bins meant I could not get in them and compress the grass cuttings when adding them and I think the top open area was too small for that volume of compost so not enough air was getting in.IAs it happens all 3 bins failed to live up to expectations and I resolved to cut 2 feet off each one with a disc grinder & start again. Then my grass collector broke so nothing happened in 2010.No money to fix.

  • My Mill here is open to the public every sunday 10 till 4 April to September so you can have a look see at my 3 bins when you visit. You can actually see them from the car park so no need to pay the £4 entrance fee!
