This half hour video documents the ongoing work of Permaculture Gurus, Geoff and Nadia Lawton, in the Dead Sea Valley. It begins with the famous original 'Greening the Desert' five minute video clip, and then continues into Part II, a 2009 update to the 2001 original.

If you prefer, you can watch the whole thing in one hit on Vimeo:

You'll get to see and learn about the original Greening the Desert site and see some of the spin-off effects of its influence throughout Jordan, and you'll also be introduced to a new educational demonstration site that was started in 2008.

You can see the video, and more information about it, in its original post here:

This is inspiring, practical work - the kind of work that should be encouraged, supported and emulated worldwide. It is the ultimate root-cause type of aid work.

Actually he has taken his work everywhere.. there are loads of permaculture design courses going on in America and the UK, I attended one and believe me the people there were not that desperate.. more desperately concerned about the state of the world. There are many people putting this into action and the permaculture community is growing rapidly.

He compares people to giant maggots, then wonders why his funding gets cut?

I'll give you a reason as to why permies like Lawton and Mollison take their message to the third world. It is because the third world, due to desperate living circumstances, has the ears to listen while we in the west with all of our oil derived wealth and social welfare systems do not have that same desperation to listen.

As Fukuoka has pointed out, it is inefficient to raise grazing animals. Stop raising goats and rely more on plant proteins. Grow grains and legumes. Use the straws from grains and the nitrogen from legume to enrich the soil. Over grazing leads to soil erosion. Also, replace some grass by trees cause trees will bring lots of minerals from deep underground as they shed their leaves.
