and the great Vivian Pickles!

@kragary I don't think that she's intentionally cruel, just incredibly careless. Besides the main character is overly sensitive, so perhaps Beatrice's remarks wouldn't have mattered to someone with a firmer grasp on their identity and position.

Well, really--it is Maxim who is cruel to her. Not intentionally, but in his colossal selfishness. Not bothering to explain all the boobie traps and "forbidden" subjects, etc to the poor new Mrs. DeWinter. I'm loving Jeremy as him though--he is much more attractive than Olivier, even when he is being an ass.

....is that the demon headmaster?

I can't believe I didn't realize what a bitch Beatrice is until on my second read. In one or two short conversations she managed to plant about a gazillion fears and doubts in poor Mrs. DeWinter's mind. I'm sure she did it intentionally. Then, when I knew what to look for, I noticed she does it to all the other characters, too. She's a bully, that's what she is.

I just love Maxim's interaction with his sister! I have to say, Jeremy Brett has really become my favorite Maxim :)

Oh Lord! Jeremy Brett!

@danframpton Bay - the forbidden word of Manderley. Espessially if you mention the word swimming as well.
I could eat Jeremy alive.
