It's been a long time since I've been over this way!

Some of the guys, including me, couldn't make it to the last Wednesday Night Ride so we put together a little Sunday jaunt.
Someone suggested this route and it was generally agreed that learning to play in gravel on a road bike is a good idea, which is true, but that didn't stop me taking the DR :)

The big boys on the big bikes did very well. Us little boys on the little bikes did even better :)

Was also testing out a pressie from the missus, the chest mount for the Gopro. I like!
(with thanks to dty2dty2 for the inspiration)

  • That stock track can come in handy going up the hill when there is a bit of traffic.Did it years ago with a mate,he was on a DR125,I was on my brother's XR200.We had a road bike go tearing past us through Barrytown (think thats the name) and there was a heap of cars with boats etc heading that way too.Took the stock track and beat the road bike up the hill.He did a double take when it came to passing us again on the way down the hill past the Hilltop pub.Priceless.

  • @Peril007 G'day mate! How was the move to OZ? What did you do with your bike in the end?

I might go explore that stock track tomorrow or go over Western Valley road. There's a few road bikes that want to get more practice on gravel.

They did Western V. Rd. a few weeks back, sounds like they enjoyed it so they're going back for more ... will have to take the DR again :)

  • this made me so homesick. watching you go down the Port Levy road through Holmes Bay. Used to live there years ago. Pigeon Bay is a beautiful place

  • @pusswasp755 Sorry 'bout that bro! My original aim of making these vids was to show friends overseas a small slice of NZ, didn't think that it would make kiwis away from home a little homesick.

When we stopped in Pigeon bay I felt so chilled out I could've stayed for a long time!

How long you been in OZ?

  • Pretty scenic but damn I'd hate to be on a road bike on that!

  • @r1gester Yea, I had enough fun slipping around and I was on a dirt bike! The road bike guys did really well, most of them are very experienced riders and it showed.

  • @peeteey OZ is bloody hot!

I ended up selling the bike to "The Pom"/Kenny.

The stock track is a bit of fun,but when we last came down about a year ago,it seemed a lot steeper than I rememebered,so be aware it may get a bit tricky going up.

  • @peeteey It looked like a BMW or a Ural. I was not sure. I did not know that the Chinese had their way with it too. I know of a guy in Tucson who has one, but it's fairly new. He rarely uses it.

  • @cashstore1 It's cool huh? It's a CJ, a Chinese version of the Ural, which is a Russian version of the BMW made from the plans they found in the BMW factory when the Russians entered Germany at the end of WW2. So the Germans invented it, the Russians found it then sold it to the Chinese. Pretty round-a-bout but I find that stuff interesting.

I forget what year this particular bike is, early 50s I think, but was made according to those original plans from the 40s, as were the Urals. Cool huh?
