My school assigned me a physics project to do...

This should be the final one..

  • Boyles law is the relationship between pressure and volume. It states that at a constant temperature, the absolute pressure and the volume of the gas is inversely proportional.

In my experiment, as i go deeper underwater, the absolute pressure affecting the bottle increases. Since the relationship between the pressure and volume is inversely proportional, the volume of the gas decreases, causing the bottle to contract, crushing the bottle.

  • Boyles law is calculated by the formula PV=k

where P is the pressure of the system, V is the volume of the gas and k is the constant value representing the pressure and volume of the system.

    At the surface, k is 0.5 , P is 1and V is 0.5 litres.

    1 atm x0.5 litres =0.5

But at 30 meters, the pressure increases, the volume has to decrease as the outcome has to be the same.

  • Since every 10 meters deeper, the pressure increases by 1atm, P would shoot up to 3 atm and to make up for the increased pressure, V would be 0.167(3s.f) litres to make 0.5N/m2(Pa)

    so 3 atm x 0.167 litres = 0.501.

The reason why both volumes are not the same by 0.001 is because that the seal of the bottle cap is not perfect. The only way to get a perfect result is to do the experiment under laboratory conditions

  • if i do 5 meters scuba diving will i need to clear my ear and exhale before coming to the surface?

  • Well done jasvagas! You inspired me. On my next dive I will take an empty plastic soda bottle with me just as you did. It will be a dramatic demonstration. Once at depth I will fill it with air, seal it, and watch what happens upon ascent. Thank you for the video.

  • too many black screens on video :(((
