This video illustrates the importance of squishing the center prong of the cap flat enough so that it doesn't get in the way when you are trying to close your snap. If the smushed prong is not flat enough, you can try to increase the amount of pressure you are using to flatten the snaps. But if that doesn't work, then more likely the problem is due to your fabric being too thin. As shown in the video, you can use scrap fabric, double or triple the layers, and then try to attach the snaps to the increased layers to determine whether the thinner fabric was the source of your problem.
