This is an audio podcast of the Sunday, August 10, 2008 episode of "Political Shoot-out," a WLS radio show [airing every Sunday night on 890 AM Radio from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm], hosted by Tom Roeser, with guests Charlie Johnston (Republican political campaign consultant) and Jeff Berkowitz (TV political interview show host). Topics discussed include whether public corruption in Chicago is unstoppable, voters may tire of the incompetence and the inability to govern exhibited by Illinois' Democratic state party leaders, the Illinois GOP state legislative leaders are offering a positive alternative to Democratic programs and gridlock, Carol Main was right to report, uncritically, in her Chicago Sun-Times column (Aug. 10), team Obama's assertion that Barack Obama's falling poll numbers have little importance for predicting who is likely to win the American Presidency in November, 2008 and much, much more.
Berkowitz argued that the State GOP legislative leaders (Watson and Cross) have failed to articulate a positive agenda for Illinois' state government. Republican State House minority leader Cross called in during the latter part of the show, responding that the State GOP had a program alternative to that of the Democrats. Berkowitz and Johnston pushed back, arguing essentially that what Cross had is a list of slogans, not a well-defined set of programs. Further, Berkowitz challenged Cross to meet with Senator Meeks to propose a private-public school choice program that would improve the quality of education without requiring an income tax increase.
