For a complete lesson on customary unit conversions, go to http://www.yourteacher.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn the following customary units of measurement: inch, foot, ounce, ton, fluid ounce, pint, gallon, yard, pound, cup, quart, and so on. Students also learn to convert from one customary unit of measurement to another using the following conversion factors: 60 seconds = 1 minute, 7 days = 1 week, 3 feet = 1 yard, 16 ounces = 1 pound, 4 quarts = 1 gallon, and so on. Students are then asked to solve problems using conversion factors, such as 18 feet = ____ inches.

  • If you want to convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit, you multiply. Why? Because the smaller units are more numerous. There are 12 inches to a foot, which means there are 12 times as many inches as feet. If you want to convert from inches to feet, however, you divide by 12. Why? Because feet are 1/12 as numerous as inches.

Remember, the smaller the unit the more there are of them. The larger the unit, the fewer there are of them. Hope this helps, and no jokes about small units!

  • i like the guy better!!!!!
