The relationship between Thomas and Henry must have been a complex and turbulent one. As grandson of The Conqueror Henry was used to getting his own way and would brook no resistance to this. Thomas was a complicated personality and great intellect ,he also took his priesthood very seriously. Unlike many other churchmen of the time, the priesthood and bishopric were not just a path to wealth and power for Thomas.Once ordained as archbishop he felt it his duty to put the church before the King.
to fully understand this incident in history one must look beyond the concept of "good vs. evil". There has been a long standing conflict between "church and state". Throughout the middle ages, the pope in Rome held much power over all of Europe. This caused conflict with Kings looking to reign in more power over their own kingdoms and their subjects. Kings wanted to make their own decisions rather than looking to Rome for approval.
Even today we see the struggle between church and state.
Sorry, he was first and foremost a cistercian priest. All priests during his time of his education were catholics but More was a cistercian which explains his passion for the papacy.
He was a cistercian priest. That explains his zealous defense of his church. And how the church battled kings for the power of who was closest to God. Kings or the Pope?
