Curitiba is the capital and largest-city of the Brazilian state of Paraná. The city has the largest population, the largest economy in the State and also in southern Brazil. According to the American magazine Reader's Digest, Curitiba is the best place to live in Brazil. The population of Curitiba numbers approximately 1.8 million people (7th largest nationwide) and the latest GDP figures for the city surpass US$17 billion (ranking 4th nationwide) according to IBGE.
Its metropolitan area comprises 26 municipalities with a total population of over 3.2 million. Curitiba is an important cultural, political and economic centre in the country. The city sits on a plateau at 932 metres (3,058 ft) above sea level. It is located 105 kilometres (65 mi) west of the sea port of Paranaguá and it is served by Afonso Pena International and Bacacheri airports.
Growth of the city was based on the cattle trade, being half way between cattle breeding country to the South and markets to the North. Waves of European immigrants started arriving after 1850, mainly Germans, Italians, Poles and Ukrainians, contributing to the economic and cultural development of the city.
Currently, only small numbers of foreigners migrate to Curitiba, and these are mainly immigrants from Middle Easter and South American countries, but there is a substantial inward flow of Brazilians from other States of the country (it is estimated that nowadays about half the population of Curitiba was not born in the city).
Curitiba hosts the Federal University of Paraná, regarded as the first university in Brazil, established in Curitiba in 1912, one year before electric streetcars were first deployed. In 2010 the city was awarded the Globe Sustainable City Award which was set up to recognize those cities and municipalities which excel in sustainable urban development around the world.

Segundo um levantamento feito pela International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA), Curitiba é a sexta cidade brasileira com o maior número de eventos internacionais e, segundo dados da FIPE, é a terceira cidade a receber turistas estrangeiros para fins de negócios.
Curitiba é conhecida por suas soluções urbanas diferenciadas, notadamente por seu sistema integrado de transporte coletivo que, em conjunto com as vias regulares de trânsito, tem servido como indutor de seu desenvolvimento urbanístico, especialmente a partir da década de 1970.
O sistema de transporte público de Curitiba é habitualmente lembrado por seus terminais de passageiros interligados por canaletas exclusivas para ônibus biarticulados e complementados com o "ligeirinho" e alimentadores diferenciados por cores. Esse modelo tem inspirado experiências similares em cidades de outros países, como Los Angeles e Nova Iorque, onde houve, na década de 1990, a instalação experimental de uma linha de "ligeirinho", ligando a prefeitura ao World Trade Center.
Espalhadas pela cidade e comumente integradas com os terminais de ônibus, estão as Ruas da Cidadania, centros municipais que congregam secretarias e órgãos públicos municipais, estaduais e federais, pontos de comércio, serviços gratuitos de acesso à Internet e equipamentos de lazer, como parques infantis, quadras poliesportivas e canchas de futebol.
O zoneamento urbano da cidade, integrado ao sistema de transporte, tem permitido um desenvolvimento arquitetônico e urbanístico tido, por certos analistas, como coeso e harmônico, sem os principais problemas das grandes metrópoles modernas.
Na década de 1990, a cidade foi agraciada com o prêmio United Nations Environment Program, da ONU, considerado o prêmio máximo do meio ambiente no mundo.
A capital paranaense foi a única cidade brasileira a entrar no século XXI como referência nacional e internacional de planejamento urbano e qualidade de vida;
