Celebrity Eclipse the latest £500 million cruise ship from Celebrity Cruises arrived into Southampton docks this morning for what was meant to be four days of launch celebrations. Instead, all plans were cancelled to enable the 122,000 tonne ship to about-turn and head to Bilbao in Spain to pick up 2,000 British tourists stranded by the travel chaos following the eruption of the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano in Iceland last week. The 2,850-guest luxury cruise ship arrived in Southampton at 9am morning and will depart for Spain this evening having been checked over by British coastguards. She is expected to arrive in Bilbao in the early hours of Thursday (22nd April) and will take on stranded tourists throughout the morning before setting sail for Southampton where she is expected to arrive late on Friday evening. As many holidaymakers as possible will be given bedrooms on the ship for the overnight journey back to the UK, providing a little bit of luxury to follow their ordeal.
