Pumpkin learns to retrieve his toy
(a little plastic computer part - don't worry its safe)

I use the clicker when he bring the toy and drops it in my hand

I also wipe the desk so that he won't get too distracted with finding food instead of bringing back the toy

(8 month old cockatiel)

took him 2 days to learn to retrieve and aim properly into my hand
(this will vary with your bird ..it might take more time ..or less)

TIP:
if u want your bird to learn this its a good idea to use something he likes to play with ..or is interested in
- when he has the object in its beak tease it with food so the bird will come closer to you and reward it with a treat
-the bird will naturally drop the object when he is near the food
- to make your bird pick it up point towards it and tap your finger /nail to bring his attention to the object
- keep doing that till he comes closer and closer to you
- use the clicker to let the bird know that is what you wanted it to do
(ex. click after it brought the toy to you)
*after a bit of training your bird will get the hang of it and will know right away what you want him/her to do*

Activities like this strengthen your bond with the bird and help them trust you more

  • aww poor thing ..give it time ...usually the next day the bird acts like nothing happened =)

  • o cool ill have to try the pen thing. sadly to say i have to take a set back with the bird cause i scared him today....pore lill guy got scared cause my lil brother slammed into the cage

  • yeh as long as its loud enough .. see if it works .. if not then just use a pen ..dats wut i do ..one of those pens with a clicker thing at the end of it

  • o ok i thought it might take longer but i can see hes gettin us to me! hes still mean as hell though....i dont havea clicker but i can make that sound with my mouth so thats still ok right?

  • he would learn things day after day or even with 2 days in between .. if something took him longer to learn i would repeat it for 2 - 3 days give a day of rest meaning i wouldn't teach him nothing new just the previous activity but repeated it maybe once in the day instead of 3 - 4 times ... sometimes it takes a week b4 i come up with a new activity ...but he learns really fast
