He spoke German was Austrian.

@trajan75 Basically, English was his third language, second was Polish and Eastern Yiddish was his mother tongue.
-
Did Wilder write the scripts? English was his second language. Could he have written the dialogue for Walter Matthau in "The Fortune Cookie"? He was a great director but that would have been an amazing accomplishment.

This man was a genius. He made wonderful movies. They are kind of like 'the ultimate movies'. They are the prime example of what cinema is all about. They're entertaining, relaxing, funny, romantic, sad... Thank you, Mr Wilder, for Sunset Bulevard, Double Indemnity, Some like it hot, and most of all, my personal favourite, The Apartment.

Hard to believe this tribute didn't mention "Double Indemnity", Wilder's best movie IMO.

I think I'm the only one who thinks "Some Like It Hot" is Wilder's best film; But that's not to say he hasn't made other great movies, which he most definetly has.
In a five year span, Billy Wilder made Sunset Boulevard, Ace in the Hole, Stalag 17, Sabrina, and The Seven Year Itch.
Most film directors would kill a priest to make just to be able to make one film of that quality.
We have talented film directors making quality movies now-a-days, but I don't think that their will ever be someone who managed to make quality pictures at such a prolific pace.

The Apartment - .one of the best movies ever made. Yet as it starts you can't imagine how that could be. Mildly amusing, but that's all. Maybe a slightly smutty office comedy. But, man, does it ever build and with absolutely nothing forced about it. If you're seeing it for the first time you're very very lucky.
