I'll show you an old Jouseki line of 'Side Pawn Picker' opening. You have to learn these moves before you go into the latest Side Pawn Picker jouseki.

  • What I showed you here was, what Black was threatening to do in the next move.

And White's taking the Knight and the Lance of the left is not a big deal compared to what Black has gained. Black has won a Bishop here, and if White recaptures the Horse, Black can promote the Rook taking the Gold or the Silver, giving a big threat to White's King.

  • Very good video. It's very helpfull. HIDETCHI when the king shoudl castle. In this opening he isn't protected much.

  • In this opening, you can't castle the King in strong castles. You'll have to castle the King in the center, because the Rooks can move to the right and the left mobily, and the Bishop exchange can occur at any time.

See the last part of Lesson #17 of "How to play shogi" series.

  • Do you know some good sites for shogi openings?

Thanks a lot for your videos!

  • At 1:42, isn't it White's turn to play after Black moves its Rook to 3d and capturing the Pawn?

Also, if the Black Bishop does move and promote, albeit neither the Gold and Silver can take the Horse at 2b, isn't Black's left side Knight/Lance wide open for attack by the Rook as well, on top of that, a promotion for White Rook to a Dragon?

  • thank you! ^^

  • All right.

I'll post a video on Demon Killer after I made a couple of more videos on Side Pawn Picker.

  • Oh, yes, I heard of "demon killer" in Shion no Ou. It's an opening, where white could get the advanced knight and I didn't understand the meaning of it. Can it be really good to sacrifice the knight in this way???

I like also to see this opening in one of next videos, please!!!

  • I've hear of an opening called Onikoroshi, or "demon killer". I think it starts by advancing the left knight... what is the merit of this Jouseki?
