  • hi there, we went to 2 vets. the first thought it might be a brain tumor...the 2nd immediately diagnosed it as a 'partial seizure'. he's been on half a tablet of phenobarbitol a day and has had no episodes for the past 6 weeks since starting the medication as opposed to having several of these seizures a day.

Your puppy looks to have similar symptoms alright, cullan wasn't as bad with the fly catching but did arch his neck in the same way. mention it to your vet...hope your puppy gets better, pj

  • i can distract her during an episode too, but she starts doing it again when i stop. She's never ever done it on a walk though which is weird. It's like if there's a really good distraction her mind is taken off it. Stress or extreme excitement seems to set it off sometimes.

  • Hi there,

my mini schnauzer Teasel, 3 years old, has started doing a similar thing with the neck arching, though she isn't snapping at flies, just licking her lips. It's worrying me sick and the vets don't know what it is. They're also wondering about seizures but think it's unlikely for some reason. I can distract her when she's doing it mildy/moderately, but not severely.

  • My Miniature Schnauzer does the exact same thing. I was lucky because he had a seizure right in front of the canine neurologist. He wanted to do an MRI to look for a brain tumor. But that would cost $3,000. I decided not to do the MRI because if there is a tumor, it's unlikely that I'll opt for surgery to remove it. The weird thing is that you can get my dog's attention during an episode. But he tends to go back into it when you leave him alone.

  • My name is cullan and my nick name is cully!!

  • My names Cullan!!!

  • did you guys put LSD in his water dish?

  • You know, its nice to know I'm not the only one out there with a dog that does this. I mean thank god it isn't a grand mal or anything. I have a rottweiler, and from reading into it, I guess the breed really isn't known to have a seizure problem like other breeds, but she does this same exact thing. I mentioned it to my one vet and she said that a full blood count would have to be done but it could just be floaters in her eyes. I know its not floaters, so i'll be going to a different vet.

  • thank you so much for posting this! My 3 year old mini schnauzer has been doing this for a few months now. The vet didn't know what it was. Now I know!
