I have no ethnic ties to Africa later than the end of the last Ice Age, but this lady's music speaks to me as well. True artistry knows no boundaries.
In her songs and in her activism, she is helping to shape the modern African woman, all the while preserving what is great and beautiful about her culture.
She is a treasure to the world.

In modern Ghana, the Soninke are called 'Wangara'. They were responsible for first spreading the message of Islam to the northern ghanaians, back in the 12th century. Many settled in the north a long time ago, and some are still there today. They are a well respected people in west africa.

Being a Soninke/Serahule (Gambian) myself a decendant of The Great Empire of Ancient Ghana which ye'all know as one the the most powerful, reachest and long withstanding EMPIRE in West Africa who were the first to embraced Islam after contact with Almorivid independently without force. I thank Oumou Sangare for singing in Soninke to show to the world that despite the fall of Ghana Enpire The Soninke are still one of the best Tribe in Africa! mfsumareh.weebly.com/history-o

I'm in US,Greetings. My sister she makes beautiful music. I can listen to her music all day. Her music touches my soul. Sometimes I find myself drifting into deep thought while listening to this video. Thank you for your beautiful music.
I do not own nor command enough words to describe how much as an African from elsewhere how - to the depths of my soul - I am profoundly moved by this music and this woman's illustration of the greatness of her people, and the culture of high Mali.
