st.james infirmary-The Complete Town Hall Concert -17 May 1947

vocals by Jack Teagarden

I went down to St. James Infirmary,
Saw my baby there,
Set down on a long white table,
So cold still so fair.
Let her go, let her go, God bless her,
Wherever she may be,
She can look this wide world over,
She'll never find a sweet man like me.
When I die, want you to dress me in straight-leg shoes,
Box back coat and a stetson hat,
Put a 20 dollar gold piece on my watch chain,
So the boys'll know that I died standing pat.

  • Trombone, no trumpet on this one. Not sure how Armstrong fits in except for it was him who made the song famous.

  • @Koweela

    Maybe you are right.

I found it in a collection called "This Is Louis: Very Best"

  • This is from 'The Complete Town Hall Concert', which was performed in New York on 17th May 1947 by Louis Armstrong and his All Stars. It's the best version I've heard of this classic, but it isn't Louis singing: that's Jack Teagarden on vocals, although the muffled trumpet playing him out sounds like Satchmo. Merci pour la mis en place.

  • @remlenomis thanks a lot for the information!

i will edit it as soon as possible

  • @sotiris1985 . Actually, that particular muted sound was a Jack Teagarden speciality. He used a glass (the kind you drink from) to mute his trombone. Listen carefully at 2:24, and you can hear him put the glass into the bell of his trombone. There is no trumpet in this song.
