The reason that Serrada players do the twirl before and after a counter is to let their training partner know that they are ready or finished. They would not be doing the twirl inside of this range if it were a combat or full contact situation. Lock and Block is a drill not full contact or combat.
i also encourage you to watch footage here on youtube of GM Angel Cabales with Maestro Dentoy Revillar titled "GM Angel Cabales". Watch how they twirl in between demos. Do you doubt they're ability to handle themselves just because they're twirling? It's not the art that should be anyone should be concerned about as much, it's the person.
perhaps. the twirling is something i've seen with quite a bit of the schools out of stockton, particularly those associated with angel cabales's lineage. i don't know your background but after studying with dentoy revillar's nephew for some years, he can twirl the stick as much as he wants cuz he is damn incredible.
in a combat situation, sparring or otherwise, if they were hit while he was spinning them they would easily be knocked away. It's just generally a bad thing to do.
