We don't really know this song well, we just decided to give it a try at this gig for fun, so it's pretty rough. Though the song was made famous by Dobie Gray, it was written by Mentor Williams (brother of songwriter Paul Williams) in 1973.
Donohoe & Grimes... Jeff Donohoe (Bass/Vocals) and Mike Grimes (Guitar/Vocals). We were playing live at The Lazy Lizard Bar and Grill in Cedar Crest New Mexico. There is a lot of crowd noise, but that goes along with the live performance. Our special thanks to the girls playing pool in the background. that really give this song some atmosphere. For those who are not from around here... this little watering hole sits on the east slope of the Sandia mountains.... just up the road from where Old Route 66 (and now I-40) leaves the flats and hills to the east and first enters the mountains of New Mexico. For a lot of Americans alive today, this area was their first view of real mountains as they drove west toward California on that famous old hiway. If you climb up the hill just a bit from here, you can see all the way to west Texas on a clear day, right over the top of Fort Sumner where they buried Billy the Kid... The Pecos river runs across this land on it's way to Texas and Mexico, and the old buffalo wallows can still be seen as low spots to the side of the road... welcome to the Old West!

  • Bravo Gentlemen, that was really rather good!!!! I admire your courage in playing so close to a couple of ladies playing pool what with the hazards of flying cue balls lol!! Great stuff!!!

  • Flying Cue balls and more...It is an interesting and fun place to play. Some nights there is a saddled Appaloosa tied at the front door... The Cedar Crest /Tijeras Canyon area is still part of the Old West...

  • Well done gentleman. For not knowing the song well, you really did a great job. As for the "just the bass player" comment... I have had the pleasure of playing with a few bands (I am a rhythm guitar player, not a bass player) , and although not everyone may get the recognition they deserve, without the bass player it just doesn't sound right (in my opinion). I enjoyed your version...

  • Well, I'm coming in way late here, but just wanted to say "bravo", and thank you. Very tastefully done. Nice write-up about the location, too!
