Wood worm farms - how to collect the compost

The trays function by the principle of migration.
Start with the lowest tray: shredded paper, dry leaves, a pinch of sand, food scraps and worms. Spray with water, so it is moist, but not wet. Add food scraps weekly and make sure that the humidity level is maintained

The second tray is added when the first one is completely full.
Add the same "ingredients" in the second tray, and the worms will migrate upwards on their own, leaving their castings (compost) in the first tray.

All that is need to be done is to collect the first tray.

Now that it's empty, you may place it at the top. This creates a cycle that is easy to maintain and easy to collect.

For larger families, it is suggested to have up to five trays.

  • How do the worms breath in that system? Where is the air coming from?

  • The worms don't need too much air, plus there's enough space in the tray for air. Also, the wood, unlike plastic, breathes and so there's a natural aeration system. :)

  • Hey, I bought the system on the left from the same website. It's totally awesome! This one looks to be quite a bit bigger and a slightly different design with added lip. Quite nice, if I do say so myself. I love how they repurposed pretty much everything in the design, including the leachate tray, which is pretty much just a paint roller tray.

  • so great! where do you get those trays?

  • Dear Sour Apple,

Good worm harvest info! Please consider upload to YourGardenShow, a social network, for gardeners and others. YGS would be a new audience for your natural fertilizer. The YGS founders are Lisa and Tom, organic farmers who are also community builders. It would be interesting to hear what you think of our site, too.
